| Austin American Statesman, April 13, 2005 By Kitty Crider and Dale Rice At food and wine festival, familiar faces were a main ingredient. More names at the fest: The Food Network’s Tyler Florence rivaled Wolfgang Puck as the celeb chef most people whipping out their cell phones and cameras wanted to be photographed with. At the Village at the Shores on Sunday, Florence was paired with Mayor Will Wynn in a Texas culinary showdown against Driskill executive chef David Bull and Ray Benson of Asleep at the Wheel. With these two sidekicks, there was more entertainment than serious cooking, but the crowd was crazy for the contest, which Bull won by one point. (Cooking tip: Benson’s interpretation of “reducing the wine” in the recipe was taking a big swig out of the bottle.) Earlier, when Florence was asked where he planned to eat while in town, he replied, “Uchi, Uchi, Uchi.” And Uchi, whose chef Tyson Cole was recently named one of Food & Wine’s top 10 new chefs in America, was the big draw at the Stars Across Texas food and wine tasting. Great timing for a hometown guy to be a hero. . . . |
